Blade Of (w/ David Torn)
July 19 @ 8:00 pm - 11:00 pm
$25The debut of this fully improvisational trio, Blade Of features David Torn, Tim Motzer & Jeremy Carlstedt. Their new release, the flowering am, is the mark of their first meeting: a deep dive into spherical sonic & musical territories.
The three atmospheric yet raw explorers, with two guitars, drums & electronics, create a density of sound that may approach the orchestral, with Torn’s abstractly romantic textures & overtones floating, spinning through the sprawling suite.
Carlstedt’s drumming can just flip the band’s current equation; he creates exquisite firestorms, dynamic nuance and propels the music forward, and inward.
Motzer, with his acoustic-electric guitar, shapeshifts throughout as sometimes bassist, soloist and re-arranger exploring the edges, curves, and corners in these astonishing journeys.
“Collectively, Torn, Motzer, and Carlstedt create a cinema of the interior in which the attentive listener is enclosed. Narratives twist back in on themselves in an instant, spiking into unseen spaces. Their soundtrack is as loud as mountain thunder, as quick as a precious thought through thin air.” Sid Smith

about DAVID TORN: David Torn is a film-composer, guitarist, producer etc, known for his unique musical voice which seems to un-define a range of idioms & styles. His characterful & compositionally textural work appears both in film scoring—through his own scores, and within his creative contributions to scores by Carter Burwell, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Cliff Martinez, Mark Isham, Howard Shore etc. of course, his musical work beyond the medium of film scoring should be noted: David’s creative contributions continue to grace works of other artists as diverse as David Bowie, Tim Berne, Mick Karn, David Sylvian, Jeff Beck, Mick Karn, Meshell Ndegeocello, Don Cherry, The Pineapple Thief, John Legend, Jan Garbarek, kd lang, and so many others. His solo & ensemble albums—Cloud About Mercury (ECM), Only Sky (ECM), Prezens (ECM), Sun of Goldfinger (ECM), Tripping Over God (CMP), What Means Solid, Traveller? (CMP), Fur (Screwgun), Splattercell (ToRn Music), Polytown (CMP), B.L.U.E. – are critical points on the moving path of his mercurial oeuvre.
about TIM MOTZER: After two decades of world touring, eleven solo soundscape albums, and stunning collaborations including over 100 albums of credits, Tim Motzer continues to “traverse manifold territories in music” (Guitar Player magazine). Tim is widely known for his distinct textural acoustic-electro guitar voice utilizing looping, bowing, electronics, and prepared techniques. He has collaborated with numerous musical luminaries including David Sylvian, Burnt Friedman, Jaki Liebezeit, Ursula Rucker, King Britt, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Vernon Reid, Markus Reuter, Pat Mastelotto, and Percy Jones, among others. Since 2016, Tim has toured the world playing prestigious venues and jazz festivals with Bandit65, an improvising trio he co-leads with guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel and drummer Gintas Janusonis. Their most recent release, Searching the Continuum (Heartcore), received a rare five-star review from J.D. Considine in Downbeat Magazine. His film/TV credits include the hit HBO series True Blood, Miami Vice, directed by Michael Man, and Adam Sandler’s Hustle. For the past 20-plus years, Tim has brought his dynamic, eclectic array of musical projects together under his own 1k Recordings imprint, which has over 60 releases and counting. He composes, records, and produces his own solo and collaborative work, along with projects for other artists.
about JEREMY CARLSTEDT: When Jeremy Carlstedt plays the drums, there is a sensitivity and consideration for the music that is seldom heard elsewhere. After spending close to a decade as a percussionist, drummer, composer, and vocalist for the legendary Chico Hamilton, Jeremy learned to play for the music, not the musicians. As one of the most sought-after drummers across vast musical genres, he consistently works with the ‘best of the best’ artists both in and out of NYC. Recent highlights include performances at the Vision Festival, WKCR, Brooklyn Bowl, Kennedy Center, and festivals & venues in Europe, UK, and South Africa over the years. Formerly relying on acoustic drums as a baseline for creative expression, Jeremy has integrated live sampling, electronic drums, as well as synthesis into his sound.
