Joe Jencks and Kray Van Kirk: Two master songwriters team up for an evening of songs at Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs.
Joe Jencks sings with a lyric baritone voice that has the edgy richness of a good sea-salt caramel. A 25-year veteran of the international Folk circuit, an award-winning songwriter and a celebrated vocalist based in the Chicago area, Joe delivers engaged musical narratives filled with heart, soul, groove, and grit. Blending well-crafted instrumentals and vivid songwriting, he is known for his performances of musical beauty, social consciousness, and spiritual exploration.
A fine finger-style guitarist with a precise baritone, Van Kirk has a Ph.D. from the University of Alaska. After five years of touring and living in his van, he thought that a career in the sciences might be a bit more secure than playing music. Eventually, however, he realized that he could do more by writing songs than statistical models, and he put aside his computer, picked up his guitar, and set out again. “We are driven by myth and the seasons of the heart,” he says. “Everyone needs to see themselves as being on the Hero’s Journey.”
