$9Under contract with Paramount, Anna May Wong teams up with Philip Ahn for King of Chinatown (1939), another film in which Asian Americans have “sympathetic parts for a change.” Dr. Mary Ling (Wong), her father (a practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine) and an enterprising young lawyer (Ahn) struggle to expose corruption and bring peace to their oppressed neighbors. Wong gives a powerful and pioneering performance as a gifted surgeon raising funds for the Red Cross in China, inspired by the real-life story of Chinese-American physician Dr. Margaret Chung. With Akim Tamiroff, J. Carrol Naish, Sidney Toler, and Anthony Quinn.
