Lucy Wainwright Roche
April 1, 2023 @ 7:30 pm - 11:00 pm
$14.44For over a decade, as a solo act, armed with a guitar, a deadpan sense of humor, killer songs, and a voice that makes tough guys cry, Lucy Wainwright Roche has built a solid following across the US and Europe. As an opening act she has often appeared with such luminaries as the Indigo Girls, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Neko Case, and she’s one of few who can step out alone in front of a thousand strangers and play an entire set to a rapt audience.
Lucy is music royalty. As the daughter of two celebrated singer/songwriters, Suzzy Roche (The Roches) and Loudon Wainwright III, and the sibling of two others, Rufus and Martha Wainwright, Lucy Wainwright Roche grew up steeped in music. But her bell tone voice, unshakable melodies, and knack for wise, wry lyrics that clench the heart – are all hers. Initially, she didn’t intend to go into the family business, but her literate and thoughtful songs and her plaintive yet forceful vocals showed she didn’t have to rely on the reputations of her relatives to find an audience. Her music is gentle, well-crafted contemporary folk that speaks of her quest to find her place in the larger world, with love and other interpersonal relationships playing a role. One minute she eases us in with her flat-footed authenticity, and the next she lets loose with her wild side – and we imagine her howling at the moon. Like the beauty and drama of Bon Iver, songs build, with her voice a clearing expanse behind a passing thundercloud.
Her songs have been compared to those of Richard Thompson, Joni Mitchell and Patty Griffin. Lucy is the 2019 Independent Music Award winner for “Best Album” Singer-Songwriter/Folk category (Little Beast), and has been hailed as “one of the year’s best” by Americana Highways in 2020. One fan says: “I haven’t felt this full from music since Elliot Smith.”
