357,000+ students have experienced gun violence at school since Columbine in 1999. Gun violence is the leading cause of death for children in America, and each day, 12 children die from this epidemic. Another 32 are shot and injured. After the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas in Parkland, Florida in 2018, student survivors formed March for Our Lives (MFOL). Since its inception, MFOL members have marched, activated the country, built a home for youth political advocacy, and helped engage over 2 million voters. In 2022, after back-to-back mass shootings in Buffalo, Uvalde, and across the U.S., they knew it was time to take to the streets again and demand a better nation from our elected officials.
On June 11, 2022, more than seventy thousand activists marched in D.C. at MFOL’s second national march, and 450+ sibling marches took place nationwide. MFOL also had 70+ meetings with Congress members in Washington to demand legislative action. These efforts led to new state laws to prevent gun violence in over 20 states and the passage of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the first federal gun safety legislation in nearly three decades.
In September 2023, after years of concerted pressure and organizing by MFOL youth activists and survivors, the White House announced the creation of an Office of Gun Violence Prevention. This office will marshal a whole-of-government approach and is a critical milestone in the fight against gun violence, as it will be responsible for the creation of a cohesive strategy, serve as a centralized hub for federal efforts, and will allow MFOL to throw everything they have at the gun violence epidemic.
The results of the 2024 election cycle will be critical in the future of the fight to end gun violence. MFOL is ready to take on this challenge by registering young and first-time voters, educating young people on the issues that impact them, and encouraging all eligible voters to make a plan to vote and mobilize them to the polls on November 5th!
We hope you can join us at this special event. Proceeds from every ticket will benefit March For Our Lives’ incredible work!
