Weary of the stereotyped roles afforded her by Hollywood, Anna May Wong sets out for the UK, where she makes Piccadilly, the first of five British films. Shosho (Wong), a young British-Chinese woman working in the kitchen at a London dance club, is given the opportunity to become the club’s main act. Betrayal, forbidden love and murder soon follow. Shot on location in London and directed by German director E.A. Dupont, this proto-noir “street film,” exemplifies the transnationalism that flourished during the silent era. With Gilda Gray, Jameson Thomas, Cyril Ritchard and King Hou Chang.
