Poly Styrene – I Am A Cliché (2021)
March 19 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
$9Punk icon and X-Ray Spex frontwoman Poly Styrene was the first woman of color in the UK to front a successful rock band, and a key influence on both the riot grrrl and Afropunk movements. She introduced the world to a new sound of rebellion, using her unconventional voice to sing about identity, consumerism and postmodernism with a rare prescience. But the late punk maverick didn’t just leave behind an immense cultural footprint.
She was survived by a daughter, Celeste, who became the unwitting guardian of her mother’s legacy and demons. Misogyny, racism and mental illness plagued Poly’s life, and the lasting trauma scarred the pair’s relationship. With narration by Ruth Negga (Loving), this film follows Celeste’s journey to better understand Poly Styrene as an icon and mother. As with other ICFS events, expect prizes, surprises, comfy sofas and a convenient bar.
2021. Not rated. 96 minutes.
