SUMMARY:Attack Attack!
DESCRIPTION:If you went to Warped Tour in the mid 2000’s\, shopped at Hot Topic\, or were active on Myspace; then you have heard the name “Attack Attack!” While the band’s career was relatively short-lived\, their reputation has done nothing but grow since the band went on indefinite hiatus in 2013. Known for incorporating dance/electronica music with metal\, the band consistently bent the rules of songwriting. They took the sounds they liked and crafted seemingly incompatible genres into anthems for local Ohio scene kids\, and later\, audiences across the globe. After years of silence\, Attack Attack! is poised to explode back onto the scene. They’re here to remind you that rules are made to be broken\, adversity is meant to be overcome\, and that legends never die.

SUMMARY:The Cactus Blossoms (w/ Alexa Rose)
DESCRIPTION:The Cactus Blossoms\n“Hey baby\, do you wanna take a trip with me? / I’ve got a feeling there might be a silver lining all around.” So begins One Day\, the captivating new album from critically acclaimed Minneapolis duo The Cactus Blossoms. Written and recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic\, the record explores the tension between optimism and despair that’s defined much of the past few years of American life\, examining the power (or naïveté\, depending on your perspective) of positive thinking in the face of chaos and uncertainty. The songs here are tender and timeless\, with straightforward arrangements centered around brothers Jack Torrey and Page Burkum’s airtight harmonies\, and the performances are warm and intimate to match\, delivered with a soulful\, ’70s-inspired palette of playful Wurlitzer\, breezy guitars\, and muscular percussion. \nThe Cactus Blossoms broke out nationally in 2016 with their JD McPherson-produced debut\, You’re Dreaming. Dates with Kacey Musgraves\, Jenny Lewis\, and Lucius followed\, as did raves from the New York Times and NPR\, who praised “the brothers’ extraordinary singing.” The band was further catapulted into the spotlight in 2018\, when David Lynch tapped them to perform in the return of Twin Peaks\, and continued to build on their success with their 2019 sophomore LP\, Easy Way\, which led Rolling Stone to laud the duo’s “rock-solid\, freak of genetics harmonies.” \nWith special guest Alexa Rose.

The suave. The sax. Thanks! leaves audiences with a show to remember whenever they hit the stage. What started out as three guys in a basement\, has continuously built into a theatrical\, reflective and dramatic performance that moves fans of all ages. \nThe six-piece rock outfit features rhythmic piano\, melodic bass lines\, jazz-influenced drums and a tight three-piece horn line laced with a deep\, soulful vocal and rocking lead saxophone. Dressed to impress\, Thanks brings a touch of class each and every night\, embracing the art of performance to create a show-stopping atmosphere. \nFronted by multi-instrumentalist (piano\, keys\, saxophone) Andrew Grella and woven together by bassist Andrew DeWolf and drummer Ben “Chunk” Martin\, the group embodies the collaboration of all three artists talents. The band has recently added a three-piece horn section to fill out their sound. \nPlaying in venues up and down the state of New York\, the bands reach has gone as far north as Glens Falls\, NY and as far south as New York City. From dive bars to full stages\, Thanks brings a palpable energy to the stage that is sure to leave an impression and entertain. \nBand Website: www.thankstheband.us \n  \nSon of a Gun\nLate 2018\, Ben \, Rob and Tyler formed Son of a Gun. Bringing a jam sensibility to straight-ahead Rock & Roll. The power trio from the Capital Region has been bringing the fire on stage across NY state. With the Shutdowns in 2020\, the band saw that as an opportunity to write and record. Ready and willin’ to power on\, keep an eye out for shows in your area. \nBand Website: www.sonofagunband.com \n  \nE.R.I.E.\nHailing from New York’s vibrant Capital Region\, E.R.I.E. debuted with “Don’t Wanna Live\, Don’t Wanna Die” on Mint 400 Records in September of 2020. The eleven-song full-length takes a contemporary approach to some familiar musical landscapes and gives them new life. Combining addictive progressions with alternative undertones\, the record boasts an anthemic pop-rock aesthetic\, with the integrity of an early 2000’s basement or VFW hall.\n\nThe project was born out of a tumultuous experience which resulted in an unexpected\, three-day stint in the hospital. Late one night\, songwriter TJ Foster’s heart stopped on his bathroom floor\, and he found himself on a hospital bed preparing for emergency heart surgery. Fighting existential introspection and difficult questions helped lay the foundation for a new project\, dubbed E.R.I.E. as a mnemonic representation of his daughters’ names.\n\n“Don’t Wanna Live\, Don’t Wanna Die” was written and recorded at home\, and mastered by Grammy-nominated mastering engineer\, Mike Kalajian. Matt Delgado (guitar)\, Chad Flewwelling (drums) and Jordan Stewart (bass) joined Foster to complete the band’s lineup\, and together\, they have been captivating the scene with their passionate\, energetic performances ever since venues were finally able to re-open their doors.\nWebsite: https://abandcallederie.bandcamp.com \n  \nJennie Angel\nJennie Angel was nominated by the Josie Awards in Dollywood as “female rising star of the year” for modern country music and a songwriting achievement award for her new single “Move On”. Jennie was born in Augusta Georgia and grew up being influenced by her parents love of Christian and Country music. Jennie loves old classic country music and her original songs sound more like pieces from that time in history. Jennie went through high school playing music on flute\, tuba\, piano and guitar. Jennie has been writing songs since she was 13 years old. In college\, Jennie would go play open mics and people loved her music\, so now Jennie has pursued music as her professional career. Jennie has released 5 studio tracks and will be heading into the studio for a full album to release Spring 2022. Jennie has been accepted into the Academy of American Country Music and will be attending the awards March 2022 as well!\nJennie’s band The Outlaws is Kirsten Dellvecchio\, Robert Schroeder and Eddie Weiner. \nWebsite: www.jennieangelmusic.com \n  \nDeb Cavanaugh\nSinger-songwriter\, multi-instrumentalist and roots singer Deb Cavanaugh lives in the foothills of the Taconic Mountains\, in upstate New York. She started making music as a toddler singing before she spoke and singing harmony and rounds by age 3. Her dad exposed her to Classical\, Big Band and Jazz. As a teenager\, while studying classical voice\, she became enamored with blues\, rock and Motown. While studying classical music\, she was given the opportunity to sing Duke Ellington’s sacred music in a church choir directed by him. During the mid-70s\, Deb met her future husband and hitchhiked with him across the country to San Francisco\, jumping into the world of rock and roll. They formed the band General Eclectic. After moving back and forth from coast to coast\, sometimes in a VW bus\, they eventually found their way to upstate New York. After spending her next twenty years immersed in the folk music community\, she now combines all of her musical influences writing and performing songs in a variety of styles. \nShe plays many genres\, including rock and roll\, jazz\, blues\, children’s songs\, folk and more. She incorporates traditional American culture into her events with the mountain dulcimer and limberjack as well as making crankie rolls\, another American tradition. Deb also teaches Music Together®\, an early-education research-based program for families with young children. \nThey say that variety is the spice of life\, and Deb sets out to prove this in her many endeavors. \nWebsite: www.deb-cavanaugh.com

SUMMARY:Gov't Mule - Spring Tour 2022
DESCRIPTION:Southern rock jam band heroes Gov’t Mule get groovy at the Palace Theatre. \nRenowned quartet Gov’t Mule – led by GRAMMY® Award-winning vocalist\, songwriter\, guitar legend\, and producer Warren Haynes – has announced a run of headlining Spring tour dates supporting their critically acclaimed\, chart-topping blues album\, Heavy Load Blues. Worldwide\, Heavy Load Blues has received critical praise and acclaim from the likes of Consequence\, Guitar World\, BrooklynVegan\, No Depression\, Ultimate Classic Rock\, PopMatters\, Downbeat\, Classic Rock\, Relix\, Guitar Magazine\, Paste and many more\, including numerous 9- and 8-out-of-10-star reviews. \nGov’t Mule is Warren Haynes\, Matt Abts [drums]\, Danny Louis [keyboards\, guitar\, and backing vocals]\, and Jorgen Carlsson  [bass]. \nGov’t Mule stormed the jam band scene in 1994 with a bluesy blend of Southern rock. Guitarist Warren Haynes and bassist Allen Woody originally formed the band as a side project of the Allman Brothers Band. Gov’t Mule’s music is defined by its noodling blues-rock jams and Parliament-funk freak-outs. The band’s concerts and tours bring to mind legendary 1960s acts like Cream\, Grateful Dead\, the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Little Feat. Gov’t Mule have been a staple on the summer festival scene since their inception\, entertaining college kids and older hippies alike. The mid-1990s represented the height of the jam band circuit\, but while other contemporary bands faded away\, Gov’t Mule kept on trucking. For the past two decades\, Gov’t Mule has been entertaining ticket buyers with good old-fashioned Southern rock and roll\, with songs and set lists that seem to rise\, swell and go on for hours. Today\, Gov’t Mule are one of the last pillars of the jam band scene. \nIn 2013\, Gov’t Mule released the double-album\, Shout!\, their first LP in four years. Gov’t Mule is always trying to do new things and push the creative envelope\, and Shout!’s first disc is entirely new material\, while the second disc is comprised of cover versions of the first album’s tracks\, featuring collaborations with high-profile musicians like Elvis Costello\, Ben Harper\, Dave Matthews and Steve Winwood. Gov’t Mule has released nine studio albums and several live discs. The band scored its highest chart release with 2006’s High & Mighty\, which peaked at No. 3 on the U.S. Indie Chart. Gov’t Mule is currently in the midst of the Time to Shout Tour\, and fans know the band will be jamming long into 2014 and beyond.

SUMMARY:Alton Brown Live: Beyond The Eats
DESCRIPTION:Alton Brown is hitting the road with a new culinary variety show.  Audiences can expect more comedy\, more music\, more highly unusual cooking demos\, and more potentially dangerous sciencey stuff.  Prepare for an evening unlike any other and if Brown calls for volunteers… think twice. \n\nReady to Test Your Culinary Credentials?\n\n\n\n\n\nAs you may have heard\, my new stage show\, Alton Brown Live: Beyond The Eats is hitting the road this fall. Music\, comedy\, and culinary shenanigans will ensue and\, I’m going to need volunteers. Usually\, I just pick whoever waves the hardest and screams the loudest\, but this time I need a few folks in each town who are really knowledgeable … as in they’ve spent a considerable fraction of their life absorbing Good Eats episodes. \nTake this short quiz and let me know what you know and maybe you’ll be called up to take part in the show. SUMMARY:John Valby (a.k.a. "Dr. Dirty")
DESCRIPTION:Born and raised in upstate New York\, John Valby\, a.k.a. “Dr. Dirty\,” attended school in Rochester. At age 7\, he was taught to play the piano by two nuns\, and by 10\, knew he wanted to be a performer. (Some of his obscene act comes from the Catholic repression he experienced during this time.) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter graduating from Middlebury College\, Vt.\, in 1966\, he moved on to Duke University\, earning a degree in Idealism. He briefly considered a profession as a philosophy teacher\, but quickly realized it was not right for him and focused in on music. Early in his career\, Valby joined various rock bands that “kept on breaking up”. Frustrated\, he switched to performing a solo piano act of mostly rock and roll and honky tonk tunes. At a show in May 1974\, he added some dirty songs of his own into the set. The positive response to the dirty songs led John to focus on the more adult material. He would often write new material while on the road between gigs.\n\n\n\nValby claimed that he was named “Dr. Dirty” by the National Entertainment Conference\, a booking organization for the college circuit. He stated that he disliked the name because it “takes away from the element of surprise”. In addition to his blue comedy act\, Valby has recorded and produced several pop and rock albums for himself and other artists\, including Buffalo Sabres defenseman Jim Schoenfeld\, with whom Valby recorded two albums\, Schony (1972) and The Key is Love (1974). He also had a small role as a piano player in a Tijuana brothel in the 1983 film Losin’ It which featured an early performance by Tom Cruise.\n\nJohn is married to his wife Anne; together they have six children. In August 2012 his home in Clarence\, New York was burned due to suspected arson. As of 2016\, he still lives in Clarence.

SUMMARY:Aqueous (w/ Baked Shrimp)
DESCRIPTION:Born of a life-long friendship rooted in music\, paired with an endless appetite for elevating and evolving their craft\, indie-jam rock group Aqueous has definitively carved out their place on the national music scene. Following several full-length studio albums\, EP’s\, and live releases\, high profile performances at music festivals like Electric Forest\, The Peach Music Festival\, and Summer Camp Music Festival\, as well as favorable press from Billboard\, Huffington Post\, and Guitar Player Magazine\, the band finds themselves touring all over the United States. \nWith instrumental prowess channeled through pop infused hooks\, meaningful songwriting\, and all out rock n’ roll\, the band is a joyful musical tour-de-force. Being no strangers to improvisational music\, the natural extension of many songs live is what makes every Aqueous show unique. No two shows are ever the same. Blurring the lines between a multitude of styles and genres\, Aqueous’ sound is explosive\, fresh\, and undeniably their own. \nWebsite: www.aqueousband.com \n  \nVoted a finalist for New York State’s top up and coming rock band\, Baked Shrimp has established a name for themselves across the eastern half of the United States. In just four years the high-energy rock trio has performed multiple extensive tours\, released three albums\, and is a name well-known in the festival circuit. Baked Shrimp has billed with artists such as Dweezil Zappa\, Lotus\, Spafford\, moe.\, Ghost-Note\, Twiddle\, Kung Fu\, Mark Letteri\, Aqueous\, Mungion\, and more on festivals such as Great South Bay Music Festival (NY)\, Karnival of the Arts (PA)\, Adirondack Independence Music Festival (NY)\, and more. The band has featured sit-ins by Mihali Savoulidis and Ryan Dempsey (Twiddle)\, Rob Compa (Dopapod)\, Mike Gantzer (Aqueous)\, and Brandon “Taz” Niederauer. Baked Shrimp is rapidly making new fans outside of their home-base of New York on their tours which land them as north as Maine\, as west as Indiana\, and as south as Alabama. The trio keeps it fresh from night to night with a catalogue of over one-hundred songs of original material. They are consistently asked back by venues and fans across the country. \nIn November of 2020\, the band was struck with tragedy upon hearing the news their most loyal supporter and ambassador\, Lon Gellman had suddenly passed away. Baked Shrimp made it their band goal to honor his legacy in all the ways they could think of. The first thing the band did in 2021 was put together a virtual music festival live stream called “Live for Lon” which featured a live Baked Shrimp set in addition to performances submitted by Mihali Savoulidis and Ryan Dempsey from Twiddle\, Brandon “Taz” Niederauer\, Andy Frasco\, and more. The event raised $2\,700 for White Light Foundation. During the stream\, Baked Shrimp announced the plans for their first ever music festival which was called “LonCon\,” and took place over the course of two days at legendary Arrowhead Ranch in August of 2021. The festival was a great success and the band plans to make it an annual tradition. \nOn March 26th\, 2021\, Baked Shrimp released their second studio album\, Conscious. The ten-track album brought the band’s sound to a whole new level with added layers of horns\, synthesizers\, and strings. Conscious received quick praise by major media outlets such as LiveForLiveMusic\, Grateful Web\, The Sound Podcast with Ira Haberman\, and more. Following the release of Conscious\, the trio teamed up with PR Manager Greg Knight\, who in the same role for Goose followed their epochal rise to national acclaim. \nBaked Shrimp is fresh off a nearly 40-date 2021 Summer Tour in which the band broke new ground and added an overwhelming surge to their increase in popularity. With little time off\, the trio heads back to the road for a Fall Tour which includes a milestone performance at New York City’s legendary Brooklyn Bowl. \nBand Website: bakedshrimpmusic.com

SUMMARY:The Sharks w/ Johnny Rabb & The Jailhouse Rockers
DESCRIPTION:The Sharks : Formed in 1981 \, the Sharks were part of a new and exciting music scene in Albany NY. Originally a 7 piece band featuring a three piece horn section\, the Sharks were set apart from the more minimalistic bands of the times. What they did share with the other bands was an audience hungry for original music. \nJohnny Rabb and the Jaihouse Rockers : Johnny Rabb is a straight-ahead Rock and Roller in the tradition of the great American ‘50’s sound – the pure\, simple\, raging roots music that performers such as Jerry Lee Lewis\, Elvis and Chuck Berry captured. An artist with an extensive catalog\, Rabb can bring audiences to tears with his ballads and to the dance floor with his fiery rockers.

SUMMARY:Ryan Montbleau Band (w/ Root Shock)
DESCRIPTION:For as long as he can remember\, Ryan Montbleau’s been a seeker. From the jungles of Peru to the volcanoes of Hawaii\, from the beaches of Costa Rica to the streets of Brooklyn\, from the backseat of a 16-passenger van to backstage at Carnegie Hall\, the acclaimed singer/songwriter has spent much of his life crisscrossing the globe on a perpetual search for meaning\, purpose\, and understanding. It’s a quest that’s guided him both personally and professionally over the years\, one that’s come to define not only his music\, but his very sense of self. And yet\, listening to Montbleau’s ambitious new multi-part album\, Wood\, Fire\, Water\, and Air\, there is a profound sense of satisfaction in sitting still\, a recognition that perhaps all those spiritual treasures he’s been chasing for so long were closer than he thought. \n“My whole adult life has been this journey of trying to figure out where home is\,” Montbleau reflects. “I think I’ve finally found it.” \nSet to roll out across four distinct EPs\, Wood\, Fire\, Water\, and Air marks Montbleau’s first studio release since putting down permanent roots in Burlington\, Vermont\, where he recently purchased a house after more than two decades of living on the road. While much of the material here was written in fits and starts over the past several years\, it’s clear that the desire for stability was very much on Montbleau’s mind even before he settled on the banks of Lake Champlain\, and the songs reflect a maturity and self-awareness that can only come from the difficult work of rigorous self-examination. Montbleau is quick to credit therapy for his growth of late\, but he sings about more than just himself here\, mixing sly humor and deep revelations as he meditates on the ties that bind all of us perfectly imperfect humans together. Taken as a whole\, it’s a broad\, insightful collection balancing boisterous rock and roll energy with intimate folk introspection\, a sprawling\, magnetic record all about listening\, letting go\, and living life. \n“I’ve been through a lot over these past few years\,” says Montbleau\, “and I’ve experienced some monumental shifts in my perspective. The only way for me to write about it was to just get as honest and vulnerable as I could.” \nHonesty and vulnerability have been hallmarks of Montbleau’s career since the early 2000’s\, when he first began performing around his native Massachusetts. In the years to come\, he’d go on to collaborate with artists as diverse as Martin Sexton\, Trombone Shorty\, Tall Heights\, and Galactic\, and rack up more than 100 million streams on Spotify alone. Along the way\, Montbleau would share bills with stars like Tedeschi Trucks Band\, Ani DiFranco\, The Wood Brothers\, Rodrigo y Gabriela\, and Mavis Staples\, but it was his ecstatic headline shows—often more than 200 of them a year—that solidified his reputation as a roots rock powerhouse and an inexorable road warrior. NPR’s Mountain Stage compared his “eloquent\, soulful songwriting” to Bill Withers and James Taylor\, while Relix celebrated his “poetic Americana\,” and The Boston Herald raved that “he’s made a career of confident\, danceable positivity.” \nThat positivity would serve Montbleau well on the long and winding road to Wood\, Fire\, Water\, and Air. Work on the record first began in the summer of 2019 at the gorgeous Guilford Sound studio in southern Vermont\, where Montbleau and producer Adam Landry (Deer Tick\, Rayland Baxter) laid down basic tracks with a rotating cast of players. At the time\, Montbleau had little idea what he was getting himself into. \n“I honestly didn’t know what this project was going to be for a very long time\,” he explains. “All I knew was that I had a bunch of songs I was really excited about\, and that I wanted to take a new approach to recording them.” \nFor much of his career\, Montbleau had worked fast and loose in the studio\, capturing music as raw and organically as possible. This time around\, though\, he found himself craving a bolder\, more fully realized sound\, and by the time he finished basic tracking in Guilford\, it was clear that his work had only just begun. What followed was a yearlong odyssey of adding\, subtracting\, revising\, and reimagining\, as Montbleau and mixer/engineer James Bridges fleshed out the sessions with a broad array of instruments\, textures\, and colors. \n“It took a long time for me to get to a place where I could trust myself enough to stretch out like this\,” says Montbleau\, who experimented with synthesizers and drum machines and added piano and mandolin to his repertoire for the project. “I’d always kind of deferred to other people’s expertise in the studio\, but learning to trust my ears and get my hands dirty with the music was a totally empowering experience.” \nAs the songs took shape\, it became clear to Montbleau that there were discrete themes at work within the larger collection\, both sonically and emotionally. Rather than release the entire 15-track record all at once\, then\, he decided he would unveil the album more deliberately over the course of four separate EPs\, each inspired by an element of the natural world. First up: Wood\, a rustic\, earthy trio of tracks taking stock of just what it means to be human in these bewildering times. Songs like the playful “Perfect” and soulful “Ankles” wrap weighty ruminations inside deceptively lighthearted packages\, and the spare\, stripped-down arrangements make for an ideal bridge between Montbleau’s earlier work and the more adventurous sounds to come on the album’s second installment\, Fire. Infused with an infectious energy and feel-good pop optimism\, Fire showcases the rock and roll side of Montbleau’s personality\, celebrating the joy and liberation that comes with learning to live in the moment. \n“The songs on Fire were a chance for me to just let loose and have fun\,” says Montbleau. “They were an opportunity to not overthink things for a change\, to trust my gut and follow what felt good.” \nThe arrival of Water quickly cools things down\, though\, bringing the music back to Earth with a more sober\, meditative quality. Montbleau wrote several of the tracks while doing medicine work in Peru\, and the healing\, regenerative nature of that trip is obvious on songs like the dreamy “Forgiveness\,” which features extensive keyboard contributions from avant-garde icon John Medeski. By the time we reach the album’s final chapter\, Air\, Montbleau seems to have found peace within himself\, coming to terms with the transient\, fleeting nature of our existence. “Just know that you are not alone\,” he sings on “The Dust\,” “and that’s all you get to know now.” \n“Even though COVID kind of upended everything with my career\, this past year has been a rare chance for me to stay put for a while and focus on what really matters\,” says Montbleau\, who recently invited his girlfriend and her daughter to move in with him in Burlington. “I feel like I finally have a real family life now\, and I’m living on stable ground for the first time.” \nThat doesn’t mean the hunt for purpose and meaning is over. Ryan Montbleau will always be a seeker\, and that’s alright. As Wood\, Fire\, Water\, and Air so beautifully demonstrates\, sometimes the search is its own reward. \nWebsite: www.ryanmontbleau.com \n  \nConscious\, soulful\, uplifting\, even healing—that’s how many fans of Root Shock have described the band’s infectious sound and energy. With a reputation like that\, it’s unsurprising that this group is indebted to reggae\, a class of music forever married to love\, humanity\, social change\, and an almost tangible sense of sunlight. But Root Shock didn’t form on a beach. Instead\, they came up in snowy Syracuse\, New York in 2012\, and since then\, they’ve developed a voice that transcends genre. \nSpearheaded by the acrobatic\, powerhouse vocals of Jessica Brown\, the Root Shock sound is at once commanding and cathartic\, but never at the expense of a velvety\, carefully placed jazz or neo-soul lick. When he isn’t complementing Brown’s pipes with his own earthy vocal turns\, Phil Grajko gets weird on the guitar\, seamlessly moving from chop chords to girthy riffs and spellbinding solos colored by Latin\, prog\, and psychedelic rock textures—often in tandem with mad keyboard genius Brian Lauri. Rounding out the band\, bassist Bill Eppel and drummer Tyre Outerbridge make for a formidable rhythm section fluent in patterns ranging from dancehall to ska to heavy dub style and funk. \nIn 2016\, Root Shock released a self-titled album\, produced by Jason “Jocko” Randall at More Sound Studio\, and followed that up with the “Many Paths” EP in 2018 & the Waves single in 2019. These recordings are proof of the band’s democratic songwriting process\, with thoughtful lyrics from Brown and Grajko that invoke hope in dark times\, warn against injustice\, and imagine a future in which all are free and equal and united by music. \nToday\, Root Shock is bringing their renowned live show to clubs\, festivals\, and concert halls across the Northeast and beyond\, delighting audiences from all walks of life with a positive message and danceable tunes. \nBand Website: www.rootshockmusic.com

SUMMARY:Badflower - This is How the World Continues…
DESCRIPTION:With openers ’68 and BRKN Love. \nBadflower don’t care what you think about them. They don’t care whether you get what they’re doing\, because their thoroughly modern rock is more ahead of the curve than anyone else you might try and pigeonhole them with. And they really don’t care whether you like the messages in their songs\, because what they sing about is important\, if uncomfortable. \nThat attitude might seem misguided for a band who have yet to release their debut album. In this age where music’s money comes largely from touring\, fans are more important than ever – they’re the ones who buy the tickets to shows and ultimately give artists the opportunity to keep playing and progressing. But the LA four-piece aren’t complete beginners – since forming in 2013\, frontman Josh Katz\, guitarist Joey Morrow\, drummer Anthony Sonetti\, and bassist Alex Espiritu have toured relentlessly across the US and beyond\, building up a reputation as a formidable live force as well as an ever-growing mass of loyal followers and praise from the likes of Billboard\, Forbes\, and Consequence Of Sound. \nThough the band credit their years of gigging with giving them the life experience to write their debut album\, ‘OK\, I’M SICK’\, it’s also had its downsides\, especially for Katz. The singer and guitarist suffers from anxiety and panic disorder – something that he’s had to learn how to cope with on the road. “I once ran off stage mid-song and just had to take a beat and was very confused\,” he says\, offering an example of how the problem can affect him. “I wasn’t sure if I should be throwing up or sitting down. Typically\, it’s just clenching every muscle in my body until it hopefully goes away. I can barely stand up\, barely get notes out. It’s all of these feelings at once.” \nIt’s that problem that inspired ‘Ghost’\, the band’s big breakthrough single. After coming home from tour\, Katz was so fed up with what he had to go through to get on stage every night\, he was in two minds whether to carry on with music. “If I’m miserable every night\, why am I doing it?” he asked himself. It was that song\, which reached the top of the US charts\, that saved Badflower. \nDespite its success\, the group was initially sceptical about it being more than an album track. In its often graphic lyrics\, Katz plays out a dark\, suicidal fantasy – “This life is overwhelming and I’m ready for the next one\,” he sighs resignedly at one point. They worried listeners would think they were glorifying suicide\, cynically using a very real and serious problem for their own gain. “But people got it immediately and we realised how many people are affected by depression\, panic disorder\, and anxiety issues\,” Katz explains. “You hear about it all the time\, you see it on every commercial – there’s some anti-depressant being sold to you because everybody has these issues – but people don’t like to talk about it that much.” \nWhile ‘Ghost’ is a somewhat harrowing take on mental health issues\, not all of ‘OK\, I’M SICK’ is as serious. Opener ‘x ANA x’ (inspired in part by Jimmy Iovine and Dr Dre documentary The Defiant Ones) tackles a similar topic but with a far more sardonic tone. An ode to the helpful qualities of Xanax\, it’s eyebrow-raising\, incredibly self-aware and rife with meta moments (in one breakdown Katz cheerily asks: “Hey\, wanna see what happens when I mix Xanax\, blow\, and a MacBook Pro?”). Along with the constantly changing music – be it speeding up\, stuttering almost to the brink of collapse\, or weaving even more claustrophobic layers together – it adds up to something completely manic. \n“The whole song is meant to feel like a panic attack – unexplained chaos happening within you\,” Katz says. “We wrote that song together and then I took what we had to our house in the desert and stayed awake all night and\, like a mad scientist\, destroyed everything and chopped it up. I didn’t feel like it was manic enough. It’s making fun of anxiety but it’s also making fun of itself.” \nAs a band with plenty to say\, mental health isn’t the only message Badflower share on their debut. ‘Murder Games’ is the album’s most intense and urgent sounding cut\, metallic\, guillotine-esque swishes entwined with a punishing guitar line that sets you on edge. Its lyrics speak about veganism (Katz has been vegan for four years) in uncompromising terms. “That’s gonna alienate our band like crazy\,” the frontman shrugs\, unbothered. “We think it’s something important that needs to be talked about so we’re gonna talk about it. It’s about getting the conversation started. It’s about getting people to look at it in a different way and not be so passive about the idea that something in society that you grew up hearing was right might not be as right as you think.” \n‘Die’ also has the potential to cause controversy. Partly a damning assessment of Trump’s position on the environment (Morrow is keen to point out the President is not the only target of the song)\, it features Katz screaming the title as if his own life depends on it. But his sentiment is not what you might immediately assume. “It doesn’t mean\, ‘Hey\, go get murdered’ or ‘I’m gonna kill you’\,” he clarifies. “It’s more all of those people who are so stuck in their ways\, who are afraid of change and afraid of evolution\, need to get old and die off so the next generation can come up and make some change and do something good.” Despite first appearances\, it’s intended as a statement of progression. “We’re meant to move forward\, not stagnate\,” Espiritu notes. \nElsewhere\, the album navigates subjects like abuse (‘Daddy’)\, depression in the face of success (’24’)\, and social media stalking (‘Girlfriend’). The latter merges old and new\, layering lyrics about Instagram filters and the internet over a big blues-rock jam. “We’ve always wanted to write about that anyway\,” says Katz\, “and it was the perfect\, wacky blues riff to write that over. I think we came up with something very special.” \nBadflower’s focus might be on big conversations but that doesn’t mean they aren’t happy to turn their attention to less weighty subjects too. ‘Promise Me’ is the only traditional love song on the record but not even it can escape the band’s entrenched darkness. “That’s my proudest moment on the album\,” Espiritu says. “We talk about doing what we want and what the spirit of rock and roll is\, and then we have ‘Promise Me’\, which is this leftfield\, beautiful\, romantic love song\, and we’re able to spin it and make it our own.” The making it their own\, Katz explains\, involves one of the song’s characters meeting their maker. \nProduced with Noah Shain (Atreyu\, Dead Sara)\, ‘OK\, I’M SICK’ represents a band full of ideas and submerged in the most modern of sounds. The band’s intention was to make the most 2018 album they possibly could\, unfazed by the idea it could sound dated a few years down the line. “Timeless music is amazing but everybody’s trying so hard to make timeless music that they’re making vague\, cookie-cutter shit\,” Katz says. “It sounds like everything else and I don’t think there’s really many rock bands who are trying to write anything current. We wanted to make something for this generation.” \nYou might have realised by now this band isn’t one to limit themselves. “We don’t even consider ourselves a rock band\,” Katz says defiantly. “If we decide to put out a rap album next week\, we’re gonna do it. Watch us. We don’t fucking care. We do what we want. Rock and roll used to be about that spirit and that got lost somewhere.” You can count on Badflower to put it right back in the heart of things\, whether anyone else likes it or not.
